“My name is Makeba Mahalia Lindsay, I was born in Canada to 2 PROUDLY Jamaican parents among 6 siblings. I grew up in the GTA ( Greater Toronto Area) Mississauga to be exact. I grew up in French immersion until the 8th grade, so I learned all of my subjects in French, except for Gym and English. I never liked school growing up. Looking back I think it was because I was bored. The traditional homogenized way of learning we have in North America did not work well with me. I was the kind of kid that always asked why, spent hours day dreaming, had a hyperactive imagination and was always making some “new invention” hahaha. I actually did way better in University than I did in High School.”
What are you passionate about?
People who know me, know that I am passionate about everything ( I am one of those people) hahaha. But to sum it up I would say; Life. Truly living your best life, not the life that someone else or society says is the best, but one that truly makes you happy. Exploring all your interests, loving hard and fighting to maintain a positive attitude despite negativity. I am passionate about experiencing joy and encouraging others to do the same.
What is your profession?
Well…I am a true Jamaican with a multitude of jobs hahahaha. But to put it simply I am a licensed Hair Stylist turned Youtuber.

How long have u been making YouTube videos?
I have been making videos for 4+ years. But I will say I have not been entirely consistent. I had times in the past where I have gone 8 months without posting because I was struggling to keep up with life.
“I actually did way better in University than I did in High School”
What did you want to be when you were younger?
I guess I could say exactly what I am now lol. As a kid I never wanted to be just one thing. I wanted to be a designer, an artist, a Hair Stylist, have my own show, sing, own my own business, act etc. I wanted to do it all and I think that is what has led me to creating content online. I get to create whatever I want and explore and share my interests with others.
What age group do you attract on your YouTube channel?
I attract people between the ages 24-34.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
In five years time, I see my husband and I with 2 kids living in Southern California. In a beautiful house with huge windows up on a hill with a dope view and a big yard to grow our own food. By this time my TV series has been picked up by a major network and is in the process of filming.

Do you have other hobbies or crazy habits?
I love thrifting and yard sales. Maybe I am a low key hoarder ( my husband keeps me in check, he is a minimalist) but I love seeing the potential in things and seeing how I can bring something back to life or re-purpose it.
Who is your celebrity crush?
I would say… Anthony Joshua

What does Melanin mean to you?
My personal definition or 3 words I would use to describe my personal experience with my melanin would be; struggle, beauty and power. For me growing up, unfortunately, the more melanin the less you were celebrated. So I struggled to find the Beauty in my complexion. However my journey to self love and finally seeing that beauty gave me power, and I may not have found that power without the struggle.
“Make everyday count. Think about what you want in life then move and make it happen”
What tips do you have for starting creatives or people that want to become a YouTuber?
My advice for those wanting to start a channel is to START. Don’t wait for the perfect equipment, the perfect skills, face whatever it is that you think isn’t good enough. Just start! It is a lot of work and you need to see if you truly love it. Even though it seems like; “Yay, I will get all this free stuff”, the beginning is the opposite. You are putting out a lot with absolutely nothing in return so you have to love it.

Do you think a Melanin Wonder Platform is necessary?
I 100% believe that a Melanin Wonder Platform is necessary. As a little dark skin girl growing up I struggled with loving myself and being able to identify with positive representations of people in the media who look like me.
“I am so thankful that my children will have content like the Melanin Wonder Magazine to identify with.”
What would be your one super power (if u had to choose one super power)?
This question is SO hard! But I would have to pick telekinesis
What would be a good theme song for Makeba’s life?
Bob Marley – Three little birds
For me this song is about appreciating all the little things in life and counting your blessings beyond material assets. It is about pushing through obstacles and keeping the faith because every little thing is gonna be alright.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
I do to an extent. I think you can connect with someones energy right away and have love for them. But I think that attraction or lust can easily be mistaken as love.

What Melanin Wonder man or woman do you look up to in the media?
I love me some Issa Rae! Like, go ahead sis! I love people who take things into their own hands and tell relatable real stories. Maybe I have a personal love for her because she started on YouTube with “Awkward Black Girl” and I have seen the growth and its beautiful.
