What is your story, who is DaSilvian?

My name is Dasilvian Leroy Bruce, a 25 year old singer/songwriter/producer from Amsterdam and originally from Suriname. I am the youngest out of four kids. I have one brother and two sisters. My parents divorced when I was in primary school which made our bond as a family with a single mother very strong until this day. I grew up in Geuzenveld which is in the West part of Amsterdam. We lived in a tough neighborhood where a lot of people were struggling to make ends meet.  A lot of people in the area developed their talents in sports, music, dance and art. My sisters used to dance and my brother played football every day. Music found me when I was thirteen years old. At school, we had to sing a song as a school project and after I sang (Jagged Edge – All out of Love) the teacher graded me a 9 out of 10 with the feedback to really pursue singing.

What is your passion in life?

My passion in life is to spread love and awareness through my music. In my opinion the world could use some more love and people should try to understand the different ethnicities in the world in order to discover its beauty and rareness.

How long have you been making music?

I have been making music since I was eighteen years old. I just played on my keyboard memorizing the chords using my ears to determine whether something sounded good without knowing anything about reading notes. When others went out and chase after girls, I spent time making music, writing lyrics and working on publishing my own music.

Do you have other hobbies or crazy habits?

My other hobbies are football and travelling. I have been playing football since I was five. I like to see (dream)places I have never been to.

One of my crazy habits is that I try to match my underwear and socks with my outfit. I like to wear funny or odd socks just so it won’t be a basic color. You will never catch me in a yellow outfit with green or red underwear. *Laughs out loud*

Another crazy habit of mine is when I sleep I tend to snuggle up under the covers like a caterpillar and make a small hole so I can breathe fresh air and sleep like that. I love it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I see myself travelling around the world with my portable studio, working with local artists as I travel between villages and cities making music for movies, video games and making singles for people to listen to. A part of the money that I will be making, will be invested in the different communities so it can bring forth healthier living conditions and proper education in order to inspire the people to chase their dreams. Also, will that encourage children to just live out their childhood and encourage them to make their own music.

What does it mean to be a Melanated man for you in the Netherlands?

To me it means that I am a role model to our next generation just like any other melanated person. It is my responsibility to show our kids that despite the struggles such as feeling dishonesty or experiencing maltreatment we have to be there for one another and that we should strive for the best circumstances for us and create more unity among our people. I don’t feel like they consider me a Dutch man but they see me as a Surinam man born in the Netherlands. Which is completely fine by me because the color of my skin or where I come from does not determine whether I am a kind-hearted person or not.

What does the word Melanin remind you of?

Melanin reminds me of all that there is in life, pure existence of life as we know it. The thing that unites all black men and women. A gift to mankind with its unique abilities.

Do you think that a Melanin platform is necessary in the media ?

I do think a melanin platform is necessary in the media because there should be a place where melanin people should come together and exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas to help each other grow as a person and discover new insights. For a long period of time the media would use the: ‘black doesn’t sell well’ statement and that they would only sell if it was for entertainment purposes. Today, I see this is getting better and better. With a Melanin platform we can magnify this improving trend even more.

DaChoyce Rapper the one to watch! Fun New Single Out! Spanish

Who is DaChoyce?

Dachoyce: Hi, my name it’s Joyce Santos and I am originally from Brazil but raised in Spain 😊 I live between Barcelona and Amsterdam

Joyce and her momma

What inspired you to start music?

To be honest being in music was an unexpected decision. It was not planned at all. I have started “freestyling” while drunk with friends “haha” they invited me to a studio to give it a try just for fun. It apparently went well so I kept going and found my passion.

How did u come up with the name DaChoyce?

Actually, my friends started calling me DaChoyce in high school as a word-game/wordplay and I think it was meant to be because I’ve been chosen for this 🥺 I have been using this nickname ever since!

More and more people are starting to understand and accept that black is beautiful and powerful and they love it.

DaChoyce for new music video

What are most of your songs about?

‘Livre’ is my latest song, and it is about freeing yourself from any situation, person or even yourself that brings you down. About overcoming it after fighting this negatives. That is what ‘Livre’ is about 🤍

Is there colorism in the Spanish or latino community in your opinion?

I think in Spanish and Latino community colorism is getting more neutral as time passes by. More and more people are starting to understand and accept that black is beautiful and powerful and they love it. The even wanna copy it. That’s what I’ve experienced and seen so far, but we’re getting there!

Baby Joyce and her mother <3

Have u ever experienced racism in life or in the music business?

Not in the music business but I have in life, and not directly me personally but to my family members and melanated friends while being with me so that hurts the same or even more! I cannot bear to see how they get treated sometimes.

What do u think of platforms who do not support a darker skin artist because they already have one ?

I think they should go f*** themselves, and us melanin people should keep focusing on creating our own platforms and spaces where we are Kings and Queens. This gives us a chance to be loved and appreciated in our own way and by our own people!

We saw some amazing pictures, are u model?

Yes! Modeling is part of my job as well. I used to do it as a teenager and now with the music thing it came back. I picked it back up! “haha” I mostly do photoshoots with @tomclark.visuals but I also do jobs for agencies!

Joyce by Tom Clark

What is the main message u want to put out as a person and an artist?

Never give up, don’t be a victim. You should rest if you need to but don’t quit. When things are hard, trust me, they will get better!
Try to be positive, trust yourself and the process, be a bad ass 🤪🤪 that’s what I’ve learned and wanna inspire so far 🤞🏽

DaChoyce

Where do u see yourself 5 years from now?

Travelling the whole world with my music and working on different other projects that I am planning and working on! Helping people and creating a positive impact! Eventhough this sounds typical, just watch me 🤍

What advise would u give an up and coming artist?

Trust yourself and the process. Do not trust anyone out there. Just trust God, and you’ll be good!

NEW SINGLE ALERT!

I’m releasing a new single I hope y’all love it 🤍 No voy a volver

AFIA – DETERMINED

Published

on

AFIA is a singer-songwriter living in the Netherlands with roots From Ghana. AFIA means Friday, the day ..she was born.

She prides herself carrying this name as her artist name, as she carries her heritage with pride. She is an advocate of promoting your true and pure self, unapologetically. And this includes, using your native name.

Her music has always been her outlet, where she expressed her thoughts about healing and resistance against racism & sexism.

She wrote her song Determined in april 2020, shortly after lockdown started. Little did she know that within the next 3 months, the world would be going through a revolution, with the Black lives Matter movement taking over the world. All while giving us a flashback in time, back to the civil rights movement in the USA in the times of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. But this time it became a worldwide movement!

The message in her song, couldn’t be any more relevant for today as it is now!

Her goal with this song is to empower people to be Determined in succeeding in their wildest dreams and to not wait for a seat at the table but to create their own table!

Put yourself first and create your own destiny and be DETERMINED!

DETERMINED,  a published piece straight from the heart. For everyone who is systemically facing resistance: may it be your anthem, may you dwell in it, may you wrap these words around you like a cloth of protection. I am proud of you, you are amazing, happiness is for you and you deserve all the love that is coming to you! You will get there. Stay determined, loves. ♥️” – AFIA
