What was your high school life like?

I was a bit of popular but also a nerd. In the first year of high school I was part of the “popular” group. The second yea everything went left and lost friends. No friends and no one to rely on. My length was also and issue, I got teased because of my height(was 1.82 meter at the time). I learned from it. I learned that I am stronger than anyone’s words.

Have you ever experience racism?

I did. So many times! People made fun of my skin color and called me a monkey or gorilla. I still experience it as we speak. Especially in some Facebook groups.

What talents do you have and what are your hobbies?

Being a DJ is my hobby and also my passion. Also do I sing but only for myself. I am way too insecure to sing in front of others.

When did you start being a DJ? Do you have a sample of your first mix? Can u let us hear it?

Last year May I started with DJ classes at DJ Boot camp Rotterdam by Sir Edward.  He is a famous eclectic DJ. I released my first  Sound Cloud mix-tape in April this year.

Who is your favorite black or colored person in the media?

Rihanna is amazing. She is one of my idols. Why? Because Riri is very down to earth and pays a lot of attention to her fans. Her hustle is also very commendable. She is not just an entertainer. Owning several businesses is also somehting she does well besides singing. I admire that tremendously.

Do you think more females should DJ? Or is it more of a men’s thing?

It is definitely not a men’s thing! I think there should be a female take over to show that not only males can be a DJ but females are here to slay too.

What do you want to achieve?

I want to play at Big Festivals and produce my own music.

AFIA – DETERMINED

Published

on

AFIA is a singer-songwriter living in the Netherlands with roots From Ghana. AFIA means Friday, the day ..she was born.

She prides herself carrying this name as her artist name, as she carries her heritage with pride. She is an advocate of promoting your true and pure self, unapologetically. And this includes, using your native name.

Her music has always been her outlet, where she expressed her thoughts about healing and resistance against racism & sexism.

She wrote her song Determined in april 2020, shortly after lockdown started. Little did she know that within the next 3 months, the world would be going through a revolution, with the Black lives Matter movement taking over the world. All while giving us a flashback in time, back to the civil rights movement in the USA in the times of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. But this time it became a worldwide movement!

The message in her song, couldn’t be any more relevant for today as it is now!

Her goal with this song is to empower people to be Determined in succeeding in their wildest dreams and to not wait for a seat at the table but to create their own table!

Put yourself first and create your own destiny and be DETERMINED!

DETERMINED,  a published piece straight from the heart. For everyone who is systemically facing resistance: may it be your anthem, may you dwell in it, may you wrap these words around you like a cloth of protection. I am proud of you, you are amazing, happiness is for you and you deserve all the love that is coming to you! You will get there. Stay determined, loves. ♥️” – AFIA
